Quick quotes won't cut it

While reviewing a project discovery call with a prospect today, I highlighted an interesting risk that came up during our discussion.

The gentleman mentioned on the call that he had given us more time than any other software resource he had reached out to. He also mentioned that he had already received a few quotes from these other developers.

🚩 This is a red flag! 🚩

A software project of any substantial complexity will require a few meetings just to fully understand the scope and desired outcomes of the project. This prospect had already received quotes to begin working, from developers who had talked to him for less than 30 minutes!

A project of this complexity may run anywhere from $10,000 to $80,000 depending on the scope.

Keep in mind that if you get this software wrong you've now thrown that money away. Understanding the business outcomes so that the software can deliver the needed impact is crucial here.

Ask yourself these questions when you receive a project proposal or quote:

  • How well do they possibly know your business?
  • How well do they understand the desired scope of the project?
  • Do you trust their ability to deliver?
