Minnesota Issue 02: When the Light Leaves — A Nordic Autumn

The Nordic American

Twin Cities & Minnesota — Issue #2

October is here, and with it comes the shift. The days shorten, the leaves turn, and the Nordic instinct to gather indoors kicks in. This issue: an editorial on autumn in the Nordics, fall events across the Twin Cities, and a way to share The Nordic American with friends — with a sauna list as a reward.

Featured Story: When the Light Leaves — A Nordic Autumn

There is a moment in October when the light changes. The sun sits lower, the shadows stretch longer, and the air carries a sharpness that wasn't there last week. In the Nordic countries, they know this moment well. The summer cabins close, the darkness settles in, and the sauna becomes a warm refuge against the cold and the storms building outside.

This story premieres in today's newsletter. It publishes on the website next Saturday, October 3.

Community Spotlight: Gammelgården Museum of Scandia

Gammelgården Museum

This month's spotlight ties perfectly to our autumn theme. Gammelgården — "old farm" in Swedish — is an open-air museum on the grounds of Minnesota's first Swedish settlement, dating to 1850. The museum's five historic buildings include an 1868 pastor's house and an 1879 barn that stand on their original sites, alongside an 1856 church and an 1855 immigrant home that were moved there and preserved. Through October, the museum hosts Art Club sessions, handcraft workshops, and the Trick or Treat event on October 24. Then the buildings close for winter, just as the Swedish farmsteads they represent once did.
