Be as courageous as you can

One missed night becomes many, becomes more than one might particularly wish to count.

20 lessons on tyranny

Historian and professor Timothy Snyder has left the United States for Canada, in part due to the rising risks of authoritarianism in America.

Actor John Lithgow stands in a darkened studio, holding a piece of paper and looking at the camera. Beneath him in capital letters, the phrase “DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE”

Today on Snyder’s blog* he published a short film by John Lithgow, in which Lithgow reads “20 Lessons”, from Snyder’s 2017 book On Tyranny.

A list of imperative statements, numbered one through ten, with the title “20 LESSONS ON TYRANNY”. The statements are as follows: 1. Do not obey in advance; 2. Defend institutions; 3. Beware of the one-party state; 4. Take responsibility for the face of the world; 5. Remember professional ethics; 6. Beware of paramilitaries; 7. Be reflective if you must be armed; 8. Stand out; 9. Be kind to our language; 10. Believe in truth

As I listen to Lithgow’s voice I have difficulty imagining another performer who I would have rather heard speaking these bracing words aloud.**

Listen for yourself.

*(I am not sure why Snyder is still publishing on Substack)
**At the time I first wrote this, I was unaware that Lithgow had signed up to play Albus Dumbledore in a new HBO television adaptation of Harry Potter. I’m not at all happy to see an actor whose first Academy Award nomination was for playing a trans character contributing to the financial enrichment of trans-exclusionary radical feminist JK Rowling.
