Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, Bloomberg reported. Stripe declined to comment, and neither company has confirmed the deal publicly.
Why it matters. Stripe already owns the billing rails for software. Model routing is metering by another name. Owning both puts Stripe between developers and every frontier lab at once, with a view of usage data no payments company has ever had.

The number is the story. OpenRouter raised $113 million in May at a reported $1.3 billion valuation, so the reported price is a step-up of more than five times in three months. Its backers include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Alphabet's CapitalG.
What Stripe gets is a single API gateway to more than 400 models, serving roughly 8 million users on the company's own figures, sitting exactly where AI usage turns into a bill. Chief executive Alex Atallah has described OpenRouter as the equivalent of Stripe for AI, because it gives developers one access point across competing systems and keeps them from being locked in. Evidently Stripe agreed.
