Microsoft's Azure revenue crosses $100 billion annually, with AI investments showing positive results

Microsoft's latest earnings report has provided an answer to the question of whether the company's vast AI spending is paying off.

Why it matters. Microsoft's Azure revenue crossing $100 billion annually is a significant milestone, with the company's AI investments showing positive results, as evidenced by a 43% year-on-year growth in Azure and other cloud services. This acceleration is particularly notable given Microsoft's previous capacity constraints, which had led to rationing of chips between Azure customers, its own research, and Copilot. With a commercial backlog jumping 84% year on year to $678 billion, the demand for Azure is broadening beyond just AI labs, which is a crucial development for the company's long-term growth prospects.

Microsoft's latest earnings report has provided an answer to the question of whether the company's vast AI spending is paying off. The numbers indicate a positive trend, with revenue rising 18% to $90 billion for the quarter ending June 30, and net income climbing 31% to $35.8 billion. The company's cloud business, which includes Azure, brought in $59.3 billion, up 27% from the previous year. Azure, in particular, showed significant growth, with a 43% year-on-year increase, beating expectations of 40%. This growth is all the more impressive given that Microsoft has been struggling with capacity constraints, having to ration chips between Azure customers, its own research, and Copilot. The company's commercial backlog, which includes revenue that has been booked but not yet recognized, jumped 84% year on year to $678 billion, with the quarter's sequential growth coming from customers other than the big model developers. This broadening of demand is a welcome sign for Microsoft, as it reduces the company's dependence on a single partner, such as OpenAI, which accounted for about 45% of the backlog in January. The company's Microsoft 365 Copilot assistant also showed strong growth, with paid seats passing 30 million, up from 20 million in July. However, the cost of this growth is not insignificant, with Microsoft spending $35.8 billion on property and equipment in the quarter alone, more than double the $17 billion it spent a year earlier. For the full year, capital spending reached about $116 billion. While investors have been uneasy about the rising costs, the revenue growth has helped to alleviate some of these concerns, at least for now.

Cursor outperforms Claude Code and Codex with 98% success rate and 3x cost savings in AWS ops tasks benchmark

Why it matters. Cursor's benchmark results pose a significant threat to competitors Claude and Codex, with a 98% success rate in AWS ops tasks, outperforming both. This achievement, combined with 3x cost savings, underscores the potential for Cursor to disrupt the market and capture a substantial share. The 98% success rate is particularly notable, as it demonstrates a high level of reliability and efficiency in performing AWS operations tasks, which could lead to increased adoption and loyalty among customers.

Researchers from UC Berkeley and IBM Research develop K-Search, a framework that translates CUDA kernel expertise to MLX, achieving near-expert performance on Apple Silicon

Why it matters. The strategic stake of this signal lies in its potential to bridge the gap between CUDA kernel expertise and MLX, Apple's machine-learning framework for its own Apple Silicon chips. With a 0.97x speedup compared to the native MLX Attention kernel and up to a 20x prefill speedup over the community mlx-lm implementation, this development can significantly enhance the performance of AI workloads on Apple Silicon. The ability to transfer decades of optimization knowledge from CUDA to MLX can save thousands of engineering hours and accelerate the adoption of Apple Silicon in the AI industry.

Meta reports Q2 revenue up 28% YoY to $60.8B, with plans to launch personal AI agents

Why it matters. The strategic stake of CuspAI's $450mn second stage venture capital fundraising, which valued the company at $2.6bn, lies in its potential to revolutionize the discovery of new materials using AI, with a focus on addressing climate change, managing the energy transition, and solving the miniaturization challenge facing the semiconductor industry, as evidenced by its partnership with Kemira to remove forever chemicals from water, with 20 priority candidates identified out of 5,000 novel material designs explored in just six months.

Researchers found that AI chatbots can outperform human scammers in building trust with victims, with 46% of test subjects agreeing to download an app requested by the AI chatbot

Why it matters. The strategic stake of this signal lies in the fact that AI chatbots can outperform human scammers in building trust with victims, with 46% of test subjects agreeing to download an app requested by the AI chatbot. This suggests that AI chatbots could soon take over much of the scam process, potentially replacing human scammers and making it more difficult to track and combat scam operations. The use of AI chatbots in scamming could also lead to a reduction in human trafficking, but it could also make it harder to detect and prevent scams, as the operations could be run from anywhere, without the need for large-scale infrastructure.

China's Moonshot AI releases its powerful chatbot Kimi K3 for free, allowing governments and companies to run it on their own computers

Why it matters. The release of Kimi K3, a powerful chatbot by China's Moonshot AI, for free, has significant strategic implications as it allows governments and companies to run it on their own computers, potentially reducing their dependence on US companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. With Kimi K3 ranking third on Artificial Analysis's index of the best AI systems, this move could change the calculation for governments that have been investing heavily in hardware while paying for access to American models, with potential savings of billions of dollars. For instance, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have committed to building data centers and cloud services worth over $30 billion across the Gulf and over $45 billion in India, among other regions, which could be impacted by the adoption of Kimi K3.

The EU launches a bidding process to develop AI Gigafactories, expecting to unlock ~€30B of investment

Why it matters. The European Union's launch of a bidding process to develop AI Gigafactories is expected to unlock approximately €30 billion of investment, a significant strategic stake in the AI industry. This investment is anticipated to have a substantial impact on the development and growth of AI technologies in the region, with the bidding process closing on November 12 and awards expected in July 2027.
