Georgia holds emergency meeting to address AI exposing voters' secret ballots

Georgia's state elections board held an emergency meeting to address the issue of AI exposing voters' secret ballots, after a test by Max Springer, a postdoctoral research fellow at Princeton University, showed that he could use AI to identify voters based on their ballots.

Why it matters. The strategic stake of this signal lies in the potential compromise of ballot secrecy in Georgia's elections, with 98.9% of in-person ballots in 114 counties vulnerable to identification through AI analysis, as demonstrated by Max Springer's test using a $20 subscription to a large language model and publicly available data. This flaw has significant implications for the integrity of the electoral process, particularly with early voting set to begin in less than two weeks, and could impact the outcome of the high-stakes midterm election.

Georgia's state elections board held an emergency meeting to address the issue of AI exposing voters' secret ballots, after a test by Max Springer, a postdoctoral research fellow at Princeton University, showed that he could use AI to identify voters based on their ballots. The test used a $20 subscription to a large language model and data obtained from an Open Records Act request, and was able to recover the voting order for 1.52m ballots, or 98.9% of in-person ballots in 114 of the 139 counties examined. The flaw in the system lies in the way the machine records the ballot, with the identifying number not being random enough, allowing AI to pair the ballot with other information, such as sign-in data or camera imagery, to identify the voter. Georgia's outgoing secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, has locked down the tabulation data to prevent identification, but the issue has raised concerns among election officials and highlights the need for an overhaul of the voting system. The state's election security researchers had previously discovered a similar flaw in the software used by Georgia voters, but requests for funding to upgrade the system have been met with resistance from conservative legislators. Other states that use Dominion software have either patched the flaw or withhold vulnerable voting data from public inspection, but Georgia's law requires both secrecy and transparency, creating a challenge for election officials to balance these competing imperatives. With early voting set to begin soon, the state elections board is under pressure to find a solution to this problem, with some proposals, such as shuffling ballots, being met with concerns about creating more problems. The issue has significant implications for the integrity of the electoral process and the potential outcome of the midterm election.

Deepmind researchers propose 'Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence' as an alternative to the singularity, envisioning networks of agents and hybrid institutions

Why it matters. The concept of Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence, proposed by Deepmind researchers, challenges the traditional notion of a singularity driven by a single superintelligence. With 5 out of 5 impact, this idea shifts the central challenge for AI research from building an isolated machine intelligence to coordinating and governing a complex network of agents, people, and systems. According to the researchers, some of today's most capable AI systems already use frameworks that divide work among several models and coordinate them as teams, hinting at a collective thought process. This new perspective has the potential to revolutionize the field of AI, with significant implications for the future of artificial general intelligence.
