The Beat: Nova One
💄Back in my blogging days, I created a feature for The Grey Estates called The Beat. The Beat invited people in music and arts to talk about makeup. It was a super fun way to merge all of my interests and I’m excited to bring it back for Tendercore. This week, I’m talking to Roz Raskin of Nova One.
What are your current top three favorite makeup products?
Playtint by Benefit, Complexion Rescue by bareMinerals, and Heroine Make by KISSME Smooth Liquid Eyeliner
What's one skincare item you can't live without?
About two years back, I found out that I needed to be using a salicylic acid face wash to really clear up my skin. Clean & Clear's blackhead eraser scrub has been a game changer for me!
What are the essential beauty items you pack when on tour?
Since we dress up in costume and makeup every night we play, I pack a bunch of makeover remover wipes. For my tour essentials, it's mostly having my three step skin care system, my liner, a mascara, and blush or tint of some kind.
What's an item you found out about through TikTok/social media, and is it worth it to buy?
I’ve tried some of the eye masks that I've seen advertised online and I haven't found a brand I love yet, but I do think a lot of those work really well for overall puffiness.
If you were designing a beauty item, what item would it be?
My ideal beauty item would probably be my own lip stain or tint that has a slight rosey taste to it. I'm loving a long lasting lip these days.
Tell me a bit more about wearing your Nova One wigs during performance. How did you decide on outfitting everyone in wigs and how do you find the perfect wigs? How many wigs do you have for tour?
I originally designed the Novi costumes for a music video we released for a song "Your Girl" in 2018.
My idea was that the three actors in the video, including myself, would all dress like a singular version of me, like I was dancing with different versions of myself. Once the wigs showed up for the video, I thought "Wow we gotta wear these live.” Right now I have eight of the Novi wigs so we have backups. I also wash the wigs when I get time on the road.
Is there a beauty look from your past that you regret, and if so, why?
Oy vey do I! No regrets in 2023, but truly I do believe I have made some questionable choices for myself. In 9th grade, I pretty much dyed by hair orange in an attempt to maybe dye it red? It had sort of a Chucky vibe to it that was def not the intention.
Obviously, I would definitely recommend making your way over to Nova One’s Bandcamp page, but here’s more of what I’ve been enjoying too!
Ten years ago, I was probably sad and listening to The Hotelier. Home, Like NoPlace Is There was a truly important album in the life of twenty-something Lauren. I can’t recall exactly, but I think, ten years ago, I had started a music blog. I had also, I think, started a really terrible relationship?! Time really flies!
Anyways, ten years later, I got to see the album live in its entirety. It’s wild to realize how a piece of art can still resonate with you nearly a decade later. The confessional, powerful moments of that album still felt as raw and special. It’s a powerful experience to see a nearly packed venue scream along to every word of a terribly sad emo song and it reminded me of what makes music so special.
“Salty” – Pouty
🚨Pouty has announced a debut album🚨
Following the release of previous single, “Virgos Need More Love,” Pouty returns with another new track and news of an album. “Salty” is the latest offering from Rachel Gagliardi, and the single appears on the upcoming release Forgot About Me, out February 2, 2024 on Get Better Records. “Salty” is dynamic and catchy, with Gagliardi shaking up a softer beginning for an energized, ferocious finish. It’s the perfect unexpected change of tempo for a single that hinges on a chorus of “I’m salty you're sweet.” Get swept up in this one below.
Spiritual Cramp – Spiritual Cramp
This album is so much fun. It reminds me of the Hives, but it also has hints of Angel Du$t, Militarie Gun, punk, and garage rock. It is the definition of tendercore.
No Light In Heaven - Stranger Ranger
TBQH, I am very sad that Stranger Ranger is breaking up! Like The Hotelier, this band was also a formative Tiny Engines listening experience. They also played a SXSW show for The Grey Estates and New Professor back in the day, and that remains so special to me! They have such a vast catalog of differing ideas, but I’ve really enjoyed revisiting No Light In Heaven.
