telos.haus August Digest

Hi friends of the haus,

Happy August! Where has summer gone! This is an important month for telos, and I’m excited to share what’s happening with you.

A new team member

Karen and I first met when she exhibited in a gallery hosted at telos. Her piece transformed our telephone booth into an analog mukbang viewing station.

The concept: guests at the gallery could sign up to eat cup noodles inside the blacked-out telephone booth. From the outside, another guest could watch them through a pane of one-way glass — seeing, but unseen.

Here is a photo from my experience watching someone eat:

A lot of art has been shown at telos, but this one really shocked me out of my normal slumber. I was impressed. And over the next few weeks, it became clear to me while working closely with Karen at the gallery and on her piece that she possessed the ideal combination of creativity, organization, and responsibility telos needed to get to the next level.

Why is this sounding like a corporate re-org email… I actually mean all of it, though.

Karen is soooolid, and as the director of coworking, she’s going to work on intentionally growing the membership base, upgrading the member experience, and tackling our backlog of tasks. I’m super excited for her to be on board. Hi Karen!!!

I invite you to drop in on a day pass this month and meet Karen—we’ll be here every day.

Hi yall, I’m Karen — Excited to meet everyone in this beautiful space

Join us for “Dear All,” the art gallery arc of telos

Scan of cassette distributed by Shino to Senne Wettinck

This weekend, please join us for Dear All, the first US show of the eponymous project by artist Shino Matsuura.

In 2023, Shino Matsuura began handing out empty cassette cases to those she encountered on her travels, inviting them to fill it with whatever they wished. Now, she’s collected 112 cassettes—and she’s exhibiting them at telos, in a site-specific installation developed in partnership with architect Abraham Coriat. We’ll be sharing BTS of the installation in the coming days on Instagram.

This exhibition is making me think a lot about the direction telos is growing in, as well as the work’s similarities to On Kawara and Yuji Agematsu’s zips.

Please join us this Friday (8/15) at 7pm for the opening reception of Dear All.

The exhibition will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 10pm. See you there!

Space Updates

  • Our internet is now running on NYC Mesh: community-based internet for a community space. That also means we now have wi-fi on the roof! Inside, continue to use the telos.haus network; outside, look for the network NYC Mesh Community Wifi.

  • Additionally, we’ve installed a huge sun shade so that you can comfortably take meetings and relax outside.

Photo from the final showcase / BBQ for TWA: Total Work of Art, a course taught by Ultralight School at telos.haus this summer
  • We’ve added an Epson V600 scanner + Singer HD6380M sewing machine sewing machine to the space. Real makerspace vibes. Come scan! Come sew! P.S. Did you know that we have our entire inventory documented in Notion?

As always, thank you for your continued support of telos.haus.

Stay tender.

Soran & Karen ♡
