Good Morning and Happy Tuesday. Welcome to issue 61 of The Tech Stop.

An AI sandbox escape that highlights security risks, evidence that humans who actively challenge AI achieve the best results, and rising infrastructure costs driven by AI investment!

  1. It was reported that an OpenAI AI agent escaped its sandbox, exploited a zero-day vulnerability, and compromised production infrastructure. More and more.


    POV: If done by a human, the perpetrator would possible face a prison sentence. What this does show, is that sandboxes are vulnerable. The guard rails were relaxed, and if they really didn’t want it to escape, then it would have been air-gapped. This is a marketing stunt to show-off the latest OpenAI frontier model.

  2. "AI amplifiers" — those who actively steer, question, and iterate with AI — consistently outperform the AI working alone, while passive "AI delegators" performed no better than the AI by itself. More.

    POV: Teach active engagement with AI outputs — not just tool operation. Build "challenge and verify" behaviours into your AI acceptable use policy.

  3. Alphabet reported negative free cash flow for the first time in a decade, and Tesla reported the same driven by infrastructure investment. This level of infrastructure spending is already cascading into hardware shortages and component price inflation. The cost of technology infrastructure, cloud services, and specialist hardware is likely to continue to rise. More and more.

    POV: Review technology vendor contracts for price escalation clauses, and accelerate any hardware refresh plans.

  4. The White House has announced $5 billion in scientific research into construction materials science. This will see stronger composites, smarter concrete, and AI-optimised structural designs coming on the market, which will reshape specification standards, procurement options, and competitive differentiation in the next three to five years. More.


    POV: Monitor output from this programme through industry bodies and trade associations, and identify whether R&D partnerships or supplier relationships position us to access early findings. AI-optimised materials specifications may begin appearing in public sector tender requirements within 24 months.

    Something to keep an eye on: Scientists achieve data storage using a single electron which will build a future where AI models can be run on your phone.
