TfD Weekly - 21st May 2026

TfD Weekly: Tickets are selling out for our first film club screening of The End of the Internet on May 29th. Plus: an evening with TWC Canada, Bisola-Mariam of Gida on housing and AI, and a Waymo update incoming.

Welcome to TfD Weekly

TfD Weekly is the newsletter of Technologists for Democracy (TfD), a Toronto-based civic tech organisation working at the intersection of technology, privacy, and democratic accountability. Each week we recap what's happening at Civic Tech Toronto, share updates on our campaigns, and keep an eye on legislation that affects Canadians' digital rights.

Our active campaigns:

  • Stop Cineplex from Facial Detection
  • People's Consultation on AI
  • Waymo in Canada

This Week at Civic Tech Toronto

This week's speaker was Bisola-Mariam, CEO of Gida, an AI-powered housing intelligence platform. Gida matches tenants and housing operators in 72 hours or less, using an AI intake system to surface qualified matches before either side wastes time on showings.

Bisola-Mariam drew on her own experience navigating housing precarity to build the platform, including a period she spent in a shelter as an Ivy League student. Her talk touched on the intersection of housing access, technology, and social justice.

Civic Tech Toronto meets every Tuesday. Find out about future events.

TfD Film Club: The End of the Internet

Tickets are selling out for our first-ever film club screening. We're watching The End of the Internet at the Revue Cinema on May 29th, with a pre-show installation, and a Q&A with director Dylan Reibling after the film.

The event itself is free to attend, but you'll need a cinema ticket ($17.50) to watch the film. We recommend grabbing your ticket before marking your attendance, as seats are subject to availability.

Tech Worries and Woes: Real Talk Working in the Age of AI

If a film screening isn't your scene, our friends at TWC Canada are hosting an evening of real talk about what it's like to work in the age of AI. Many of us go to work every day under a cloud of layoffs, forced AI mandates, shrinking teams and workplace surveillance. Come spend time with people just like you who are navigating the same issues. RSVP here.
