Tanglewood Coyote Warning
Please be aware a member who lives on the Riviera Drive cul de sac sighted a coyote on their front porch last night around midnight. It ran away toward St. Mark’s Church. Coyotes tend to be shy around humans. A few years ago when one was under my kitchen window, animal control told me to grab some pots and make loud noises to scare it away. Fairfax County Animal Control considers coyotes to be part of our local landscape now, in the same category as our deer.
Coyotes are predators and will go after small dogs and cats, in particular. They can jump fences that are 5-6 feet high from a standing position and have been known to climb 10 foot tall fences. Ours has been described as large (the size of an overweight golden retriever). The coloring is dark and light gray with shades of tan/beige.
You may want to keep your small pets indoors at night, especially cats. Please consider keeping your small dogs on a leash, even in your own yard, at night. If you see that coyote, make some noise and let it know we don’t want it in Tanglewood!
