Alert for Tanglewood Dog Owners
A concerned neighbor asked us to get the word out that their dog contracted
anaplasmosis (not Lyme disease) from a white tail deer tick in our area.
Their dog was not showing any symptoms from the infection. It was actually discovered from her annual vet visit via a blood test. Left untreated, it can be pretty serious. Symptoms include joint pain, lethargy and lack of appetite. It's typically treated with the antibiotic Doxycycline.
We would recommend that when dog owners take their dogs to the vet for their annual shots, etc. to have a blood test to make sure they are not infected. When you check your dog for ticks, you might check yourself. Humans can also contract anaplasmosis from deer tick bites (but not from dogs). Be well and enjoy the dog days of summer.
