Workshop and concerts
Hello friends,
I’m doing something unusual today: a newsletter that’s almost entirely about other peoples’ events. But you’ll see why, after some quick scheduling updates.
The current taiji session ends this week, so the final class will be on Thursday June 3rd. I think I’ve managed to talk to all current taiji students about summer practice - if you think you should have heard from me just drop me a line.
The daytime taiji class will move from Tuesdays to 11am on Wednesdays, and the next regular session starts the week of Labour Day. More details later, once we’ve confirmed all dates.
The Monkey qigong workshop is creeping closer, it’s on Wednesday July 29th.
On the last weekend of June, the 27th & 28th, Sam Masich is coming to Victoria again, this time to teach a workshop on the Eight Energies of Taijiquan. I’ve occasionally talked about peng (ward off) and lü (roll back) in classes. Those are the first two of a set of eight fundamental energies that run through all of taiji. This workshop will be a chance to get deeper into those foundations, with a teacher who truly knows his stuff. Sam assures me that the material will be accessible to anyone who’s been practicing for a few months, and he isn’t expecting attendees to know the specific forms he teaches.
The venue will be Esquimalt Gorge Park, which is a beautiful place to think about these things. Watching the water ebb and flow through the Tillicum reversing rapid I feel the constant flow of yin into yang, yang into yin.

And for this coming weekend, something completely different. You may know that Melinda is also a dedicated violinist, and that we both volunteer for Friends of Bowker Creek. She’s formed a quartet with the other string section leaders of the Civic Orchestra of Victoria, and they’re doing a fundraiser for Friends of Bowker Creek this Saturday, June 6th. They’ll be playing at 1pm at the Friends’ Meeting House, 1831 Fern Street. Admission is by donation ($20 suggested), and there’s a silent auction.
You can read more about the music they’ll be playing in Melinda’s newsletter, and if you want future updates about her music you can subscribe. I won’t routinely send those to this list because it’s not what you signed up for - this one just happens to be in support of something I’m also involved with.
