Bear workshop: Wednesday September 24th
Hello Friends,
I’m officially launching the Five Animal Frolics workshop series, which I’ll have more to say about below. But first, quick schedule reminders:
Taiji classes at the James Bay Community School Centre start back up next week. Registration is open for:
For the autumn session, morning classes may be in a different room from usual, so returning students should check with reception. In any case, we’ll probably be outside for the first few weeks, though you never know.
Qigong at theDock is back to its usual routine, Mondays at 2pm. I do sometimes skip a week because of travel, and I’ll keep that page updated as things come up.
Back to the Five Animals! The summer workshop was a blast, but it was also clear that I was trying to pack too much into one event. We ended up skipping over some things because of time, and I could see that people were getting saturated with new information. At the same time I got great feedback and saw clear interest in doing more, so I’ve decided to rework the idea into a year-round series of shorter events. Each will focus on the animal associated with the time of year it takes place in.
I think of September in these parts as the long tail of summer, so we’ll start the series with a deep dive on the Bear.

The bear is also associated with worry, and the element of earth. Both of the bear movements in the Five Animal Frolics represent bears looking for food as they prepare to hibernate: looking around for what’s available, and then striding along purposefully. I like to think of this as taking worry and managing it by doing something relevant, instead of just freezing or withdrawing. I don’t know about you, but I can always benefit from more practice at that.
So we’ll spend an hour and a half stretching and moving and talking about what all of this means. I hope you can join us.
