The first letter

The Monthly
Balance

Fulcrum seal

Thanks for signing up, and here’s what you signed up for — one letter a month, carried on the same beam everything here is built on. Creativity, knowledge, wellbeing. Let’s begin.

01
One letter, once a month. Not a feed. Roughly a few minutes’ read, sent when there’s something worth sending.
02
One thing per pillar, chosen because it’s the best thing — not everything that happened. Curation, not inventory.
03
Plain language throughout. Especially the knowledge section. No hype, no padding, and if a month is quiet I’ll make it short rather than pad it.
§ In Motion — what’s live on the site

What moved this month

What’s happened, published, shipped or opened since the last letter.

News Busy month, with the launch of the website and brand. Included the launch of Neo, the AI behind SSC. As I mentioned on the website I advocate the transparent use of AI. A seal on each page (like the old wax seals on letters) to show when it’s been made by AI & Humans or Human alone.
Launched Science, Demystified — the second field guide is live. Eighteen ideas, seven habits, free. Read it
Live Wellbeing Plain Signal — now running weekly alongside the AI one. Evidence first, no wellness gloss.
In the build Fulcrum — the wellbeing instrument is in private testing. Multiple interactive tools and dashboards within the app, which is a personalised account with authentication. This will be the flagship app.
I Creativity — the energy that moves the beam

New stave seal and limited edition shop items

This month I wanted to expand the stave and seal images to add a new version. I always think of the balance in nature and of life and death. The most widely used cultural image has always been of a human skull. I worked with Neo to create the imagery of a skull to work within the original SSC stave image. This evolved to creating some limited edition items in the shop. Check them out and let me know what you think.

II Knowledge — the counterweight

This month in AI, without the noise

July was another month of rapid change in AI, together with a run of big model launches. The headlines all focused on benchmark scores and the main players on the leaderboard (note: Fable 5 from Anthropic is still roughly top on accessible frontier models). The number that actually matters got less attention: the cost of using these tools is dropping. The capability that was a paid luxury at the start of the year is turning into something closer to a utility — watch as this will continue.

What it changes for you: if you tried an AI tool a year ago, found it too expensive or too limited, and walked away — that judgement is out of date. It’s worth re-testing the one task you gave up on.

And one word, translated — “agent”: most people are familiar with a chat input into AI tools. An “agent” means it decides its own next step and acts for you, not just answers. Of note, it’s now being used and labelled on lots of things. The test: ask “what does it decide without me?” If the answer is “nothing”, it’s automation in a nicer coat.

III Wellbeing — the level that keeps it honest

The big sleep

Researchers identified a specific brain circuit that switches on during deep sleep and appears to support muscle growth, fat metabolism and cognitive function.

A pooled analysis of randomised trials found that cutting sleep by roughly 80 minutes a night for six weeks was associated with about a pound of weight gain — and around 17 extra minutes a day spent sitting. This is a controlled trial, which carries more weight than the observational studies these headlines usually rest on.

What it changes for you: nothing — but it reinforces something already near the top of the wellbeing list: deep sleep. This is one more reason to protect it, and if your sleep is routinely short, sleep belongs in the same conversation as diet and exercise rather than after it.

What are your counterweights?

How did you hold the balance this month? At the end of this month, looking back, what counterweights did you use in your busy life? It’s difficult and I struggle with it each day, week, month… to hold the balance is not to grab it but to recognise it and feel the tension. Take care and have a good month.

Reply

One small ask, since it’s the first one. Hit reply and tell me which of the three pillar areas you came for — creativity, knowledge or wellbeing. Any other thoughts are welcome. It comes straight to me, I read every one, and it’ll help me know where to lean next.
