🗣️ My Old Nemesis, It's Time to Say Goodbye
Not able to sell has bitten me time and again.
Somehow, I was wired to look down on the sales aspect of a project. I used to live under the impression that you focus on building the product, and users will be dying to give you money.
If you build it, they will come.
This hasn’t worked for me honestly. A lot of my ambitious projects did not get traction after launch owing to me not able to get the word out. I’ve seen a lot of friends fail because of this as well.
In my 2nd year of college, I built a web interface which allowed remote access to your computer using Dropbox as the communication medium. You could browse files, search for important documents, take screenshots, and run any terminal commands. I was on the top of the world, and I waited, waited, waited… But nobody came.
A parallel example when I focused on storytelling (because I had an awesome team already and I had identified that presentation will make-or-break it) was in my final year when we were building an educational game. It was snake-and-ladders, using the periodic table as the game board. The implementation was pretty awesome as well, and it was quite a challenging project as well as a great learning opportunity. We had a lot of fun setting up the rules. I worked a lot on the presentation and it paid off - we became the winners of Microsoft’s annual hackathon.
Looking back, this has been a recurring pattern. I’ve been afraid of sales for far too long. It’s high time I face it head-on and focus on getting the word out there.
I intend to fully master this area in the upcoming months. If you have any tips / resources to get me started and / or would like to join me, please reply to this mail and let me know! ✌️
Until We Meet Again…
