"Surekha Davies turns the tables and looks at humankind through the burning eyes of the monsters it has created in its seemingly limitless effort to isolate otherness. A triumph of scholarship that is as erudite as it is entertaining."—Lindsey Fitzharris, New York Times–bestselling author of The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I

Hallo, friends!

A newsflash: I’ll be talking about HUMANS: A MONSTROUS HISTORY at the American Book Center in Amsterdam (Netherlands) on Friday 13 November, 17:00-18:30!

I’ll be in conversation with acclaimed American biographer and book critic Julie Phillips. Julie is currently completing the authorized biography of… Ursula K. Le Guin! After our convo there will be audience Q&A, book sales, and book signing.

The event is free, but do please click here to register in order to reserve your seat, and so that the ABC staff know how many chairs to rustle up.

If you know anyone in the Netherlands who might be hunting for their next book on science, history, politics, or pop culture, or who likes buying books as gifts (perhaps even for you!), feel free to share this with them. Tell your frens! Bookstores are magical places, storehouses of lumps of treasure we get to carry away in our hot little hands.

Stay tuned for two monster-related essays being published later this month. I’ll share the links here as soon as they appear. October is, after all, Spooky Season, so extra emails from a monster historian seems about right.

If you’d like to catch up on earlier issues of Strange and Wondrous, the archive is here.

Sending monstrous waves!
