🐢 Week 17 - Social Justice

1. What does social justice even mean?

Do you know what equality, equity and justice mean? Do you understand how they differ? Here is an infographic, shared by a colleague to help you.

And a quote from another colleague:

> “But, I would add to that what my former law school professor, Derrick Bell, taught me– everyone talks about justice, but it is those who have known it the least who believe in it the most.” - Lisa Marie Boykin

2. On privilege - How the Rich Reacted to the Bubonic Plague Has Eerie Similarities to Today’s Pandemic

> In this opening section, Boccaccio describes the rich secluding themselves at home, where they enjoy quality wines and provisions, music and other entertainment.

> Meanwhile, the middle class or poor, forced to stay at home, “caught the plague by the thousand right there in their own neighborhood, day after day” and swiftly passed away. Servants dutifully attended to the sick in wealthy households, often succumbing to the illness themselves.

> how wealth and advantage can impair people’s abilities to empathize with the hardships of other…

> How do the rich relate to the poor during times of widespread suffering? What is the value of a life?

  4. Talking Race With Young Children : Parenting: Difficult Conversations : NPR

Even babies notice differences like skin color, eye shape and hair texture. Here’s how to handle conversations about race, racism, diversity and inclusion, even with very young children.

4. Systemic Racism Explained

A great video shared by a friend, on systemic racism in the United States.

5. Madison Crescent - An example of systemic Racism

And a eye-opening article about the Madison Crescent on Stratechery

6. Moving through the day with more ease

> One thing at a time. Full attention and devotion to that task, conversation, message. An easeful, peaceful attitude as you move through it.

Something I need to keep reminding myself of, as I find myself with my teeth clenched in the middle of the day.

7. It’s time to build small things

What small thing can we build to make this world a better place, a place with more justice?
