π₯ Library Champion Newsletter | π Let us shred your documents!
Library Champion,
If you have boxes of papers you need to safely get rid of, you may throw them in a burn barrel or shred them yourself, both of which could take a long time. Did you know that the Juniata County Library has an industrial shredder that can handle any kind of document, even including ones with staples, paperclips, and rubber bands?
Back in 2019 when we looked to add this new service, I asked around to see if anyone else did this kind of thing. I discovered that were no places here you could take your documents to be shredded. We knew then that there was a local need that we could meet.
Courtesy of our Friends of the Library, we have a P5 security level shredder that turns your documents into confetti. Shredders are given security levels between P2 and P7 based on how fine they shred the documents. Common shredders turn your documents into strips, which is the least secure and easiest to reassemble. The next level of shredders cross cut and higher-end shredders turn them into confetti or dust.
P5 is capable of safely destroying very confidential, commercial, corporate, and personal data. It is sufficient for commercial shredding standards. Many of us took time during the pandemic to clear out things in our homes and much of it can be papers you need to safely dispose of. The library can help you out with that!
You can start by making an appointment and bring in up to 2 boxes at one time to be shredded. Depending on the quantity and type of documents you want shredded, it could take some time.
The cost is $20 per box or $1 per pound (we have a scale to weigh your documents). We give you a certificate stating what we have shredded. We put the shredded documents in a big bag and allow you to take it with you if you prefer. For security reasons, some people like to be the one to dispose of them. Others have used the shredded paper for bedding on farms and they can be recycled, too.

Here is one book I am reading and some books that I just bought for the libraryβs collection, now including a list of all titles purchased this week! π
I'm plugging right along in The Terror by Dan Simmons. Since reading Barack Obama's memoir I've built up some reading endurance, which is just what I needed for continuing to read this dense book.
The crews have abandoned both ships as one ship sunk and the other is on the verge of being crushed by the ice (and it would sink too if the ice broke up). Now the crews are trekking hundreds of miles over ice and gravel in hopes of getting to fresh water and rescue. They have to pull with them 10 boats with their supplies on them. The crew are growing weaker by the day, many suffering from extreme cases of scurvy and other medical issues. Meanwhile, the polar bear thing is following them and a few of the crew killed some esquimaux that were nearby and then said they attacked them first, ruining an opportunity to work with the esquimaux and learn how to get fresh food. Morale is extremely low and there is growing talk of a mutiny. The story continues to become more and more bleak.

Make a gift in memory of someone special π―
A gift in memory of someone ensures their legacy and values live on. In memory of World War 2 veteran and Juniata County resident Danny Yoder, a donation of $592 was made to each of his favorite charities: the Juniata County Food Pantry and the Juniata County Library.
