π Book vs. Movie π₯
Is the book always better than the movie? Letβs find outβ¦
Jurassic Park (1990 novel by Michael Crichton) vs Jurassic Park (1993 movie directed by Steven Spielberg)
(Dinosaurs, science, thriller)
It wasnβt until I read Jurassic Park that I learned what the word Jurassic meant: a geological period of time roughly 200 million years ago. Itβs named after the Jura Mountains, where limestone strata from the period were first identified.
Fast forward to the late 1980s. Industrialist John Hammond has created Jurassic Park, a theme park of cloned dinosaurs, on tropical Isla Nublar in Costa Rica. A dinosaur handler is killed by the deadly Velociraptor dinosaur, known for being incredibly smart, fast, capable of jumping and possessing two claws that can slice flesh open. The park's investors, represented by lawyer Donald Gennaro, demand a safety certification. Gennaro invites chaotician Ian Malcolm, while Hammond invites paleontologist Alan Grant and paleobotanist Ellie Sattler.
If Dinosaurs are extinct, where did Hammond get them? The group learns that they were cloned, accomplished by extracting dinosaur DNA from prehistoric mosquitoes preserved in amber. DNA from frogs and other animals was used to fill in gaps in the genome of the dinosaurs. To prevent breeding, all the dinosaurs were made female by direct chromosome manipulation. Hammond and his team of scientists somehow overlooked the simple fact that animals like West African frogs can change their sex in a single-sex environment, allowing the dinosaurs to do so as well. Hammond and his team exert a lot of effort monitoring and controlling the Dinosaurs; when its discovered that nature is extending beyond their careful plans, things get interesting.
I grew up watching the movie over and over, while having never read the book till now. Small details differ between the two mediums: Grant had a beard and liked kids in the book, while he was clean-shaven and disliked kids in the movie. As the book continued on, I noticed how much more violent it is compared to the movie. That may have to do more with filling theater seats than following the book to the letter; if the movie followed the book in terms of graphic violence it would not have been PG-13. Many blockbuster movies tweak their scenes so to not have the rating rise to R, which would prevent kids aged 13-18 from seeing the movie.
Bottom line: The book excels in detail and thrill compared to the movie. If you wish to skip the blood and gore, watch the movie as it is great.
