I was reminded recently that books not only serve as a form of enjoyment but they change lives. A regular user of our library, Bill chatted with me about the books he has been reading. He recalled how much value he found in a few books we purchased several years back. These books were on the DASH diet. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet is a healthy-eating plan designed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure (hypertension).
(Pictured: Bill with The DASH diet weight loss solution: 2 weeks to drop pounds, boost metabolism, and get healthy by Marla Heller.)
The DASH diet includes foods that are rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium. These nutrients help control blood pressure. The diet limits foods that are high in sodium, saturated fat and added sugars. Studies have shown that the DASH diet can lower blood pressure in as little as two weeks. The diet can also lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol levels in the blood. High blood pressure and high LDL cholesterol levels are two major risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
Back to Bill. He saw the new books we purchased on the DASH Diet back then and checked them out. He found the books easy to read. They were written by a nutritionist and did not have heavy medical terminology. The books helped him understand nutritional labels and find foods that were good for his health. The studies that the diet was based on were approved by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2010, which told him they could be trusted. At his next doctor’s appointment, he mentioned the DASH diet to his physician and was told by him that it was a great diet.
Now years later, Bill mentioned again to me those books and I asked him if we could sit down so that I could write down the details. I felt this was a truly special story that I didn’t want to lose.
Bill grew up in Central Pennsylvania and on a Pennsylvania Dutch diet, filled with bread and meat. While delicious, it’s not the best diet to have at every meal. Bill used the information in the library’s books on the DASH diet to form a balanced diet and find support for building an overall healthier lifestyle. Bill likes to take walks, play golf and swim laps. With that and a healthy diet, he has been able to lose 27 pounds, get his blood pressure below 120 and come off of some medications that he had to take for health reasons.
Aside from the DASH diet, Bill uses the library’s public computers for online banking, writing, and researching medical topics. He also borrows books on American history, which he has always been an avid reader of.

When Bill graduated from high school here in Juniata county in 1964, there was no library here. From there he went to college and moved out of the area for many years. Now back in the area, he is so glad that Juniata county not only has a library but one that has helped him improve his health and wellbeing in this stage of his life.
A strong Christian, Bill mentioned to me the Bible verse from the Book of Hosea: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6). The part ‘my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge‘ is popularly rendered as ‘my people perish for lack of knowledge’. Ignorance or lack of knowledge is a destructive state. For Bill, he found the library a source of knowledge for a better, healthier lifestyle. The library is where your life can become better.

Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA MVP by Mirin Fader (New adult nonfiction, biography, sports)

🏀 Have you ever heard of Giannis Antetokounmpo? He is a National Basketball Association player, two-time MVP award winner, and in 2021, he carried the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA championship for the first time in 50 years 🏆.
The “Greek Freak”, as he has become known, has a rags-to-riches story. Fader writes without cliché and her commentary on the game is spot-on.
Grantland founder Bill Simmons described him as the following: “Seeing the Greek Freak in person is like seeing Young Scottie Pippen crossed with Young Kevin Durant crossed with an octopus. He’s only 20, takes 10 yards per step, plays four positions, has Freddy Krueger arms, might pass the 7-foot mark soon, and basically doesn’t have a genetic parallel.”
I once saw him on TV during a fast break take the ball coast to coast and only need to dribble 3 times. 😮 Read this book!
