hey, good lookin’

If you’ve been reading this newsletter since last year, you may remember a little prompt back in May (I labeled it #6, but it was technically #7, and therefore I’m actually off on my numbering, which I just realized and am going to pretend like I didn’t) that asked you to spend five minutes writing positive affirmations to yourself.

Well, ever since I did that prompt, I’ve been doing the whole positive self-affirmations thing a lot more. And about a month ago I honestly genuinely started doing positive self-affirmations daily for REAL. As in, literally looking at myself in the mirror and complimenting and flirting with my own damn self.

At first, it felt awkward and sort of embarrassing. I would sort of whisper positive things to myself under my breath or rush through them. I had to actively tamp down on the little mean critiquing voice that wanted to bubble up and temper the positive things I was saying.

But friend, can I tell you that I am positively awestruck by the confidence I’ve been feeling lately? I have authentically been waking up and catcalling myself in the mirror and grinning at that girl because DAMN she is COOL. I adore her. She is rad as hell.

I mean, yes, obviously I am not *cured of all self-doubt for the rest of my life*; however, I just never realized that that positive self-affirmation practice could make such an impact. I knew it was good, but I’ve never been diligent like this before, and I am shocked that simply telling myself I’m awesome in the mirror every day makes such a difference.

So, yeah, if you want to put a lil’ spring in your step, I 100% recommend saying nice, campy, fun positive things to yourself in the mirror every day. Tell yourself you’re smart, sexy, funny, clever, all of that. Push through the awkwardness because I swear it’s worth it.

prompt #27

This week, let’s talk about self-love. Not in a capitalist, consumer-focused, buy-things-to-fill-an-emotional-void sort of way, but for real. How do you show yourself you care? What do you love about yourself? Where do self-love and self-care fall in your list of daily or weekly priorities? If you don’t already, how do you want to love yourself?

Set a timer for five minutes, start answering those questions, and see where you get. And, as always, if you’d like to share your piece, send it my way!

ashley's piece was the intro this week :)
