Simple Oil Stick Making Guide

Measurements

Use a digital scale and measure everything by weight in grams.

Enter your pigment and desired stick size into the Wax & Pigment Oil Stick Calculator. The calculator gives you the required:

Pigment (g) + Oil (g) + Wax (g)

Different pigments require different amounts of oil. High-OAR pigments need more oil, while low-OAR pigments need less, so always use the calculated amounts rather than one fixed ratio.

For your first attempt with a new pigment, make a small test batch.

Method

1. Weigh the ingredients

Weigh the exact amount of pigment, oil, and wax shown in the calculator.

2. Melt the wax

Gently melt the weighed wax using a double boiler or water bath. You can use bleached or unbleached beeswax.

Never melt wax directly over a flame or hot plate.

3. Add the oil

Measure the calculated amount of oil and stir it into the melted wax until evenly combined.

4. Add the pigment

Slowly add the weighed pigment into the warm oil-and-wax mixture.

Add it gently to avoid creating airborne pigment dust.

5. Mix

Stir and work the mixture thoroughly until the pigment is completely incorporated.

You are looking for a smooth, uniform consistency—roughly like thick yogurt.

If it feels crumbly or too dry, add oil only a few drops at a time.

If it is too liquid, add a small amount of wax.

6. Pour

While the mixture is still warm and pourable, pour it into silicone molds of your choice.

Gently tap the mold to help release trapped air bubbles.

7. Cool and cure

Allow the sticks to cool completely at room temperature before removing them from the molds.

Leave them to cure for at least 24–48 hours before use. For better results, allow 1–2 weeks.

Pigment Safety

Wear nitrile gloves and a properly fitted particulate respirator when handling dry pigments.

Avoid creating pigment dust. Do not blow on pigment, shake it unnecessarily, or pour it from height.

Work in a well-ventilated space, but avoid fans or strong drafts around open pigment powder.

Keep food and drinks away from the workspace.

Some pigments—including cadmium, cobalt, chromium, and lead-based pigments—require additional precautions. Always check the pigment’s Safety Data Sheet before use.

Keep pigments and finished materials away from children and pets.

Oil-soaked rags can also be a fire hazard. Never leave oily rags piled together.
