"Self Perspective" is necessary quarantine viewing
I concede that this is not the most flattering photo but it really communicates the entire vibe
Bill Self is just as bored and just as adrift without hoops as you are. Tonight was supposed to be the national title game. It’s hard to swallow even though we’ve had weeks to process the NCAA Tournament’s absence.
Enter “Self Perspective,” a deep-in-the-details short-form series involving Self breaking down some of the biggest KU games in recent memory. For those obsessed with in-the-weeds basketball strategy or for hardcore KU fans wanting a pretty long look behind the curtain, it’s can’t-miss content.
Clearly juiced by the success of his Twitter takeover, Self is delivering with this lovingly DIY series, where an unshaven, down-to-earth coach sits in a dark screening room like it’s Mystery Science 3000. There are many electric moments, but what really surprised me is how often Self takes the blame for a blown play—"That’s my fault,” says Self following a late miscue by Dok in the Dayton game. Also, Self breaks down his “fouling late up 3” strategy, a rigid rule set that Jalen Crutcher completely blows up with his game-tying three in the final moments of regulation.
Episode 3 (UNC vs KU 2008 !!!) just posted, and Self takes over right when that insane first half run begins. I can’t embed the clips because they’re produced by something called WMT (which seems to be Ohio Buckeye-related? Idk) so I’ve linked them below.
Episode 1 /// Duke vs Kansas (2018 Elite Eight)
Episode 2 /// Dayton vs Kansas (2019 Maui Invitational Final)
Episode 3 /// North Carolina vs Kansas (2008 Final Four)
I hope everyone is safe and healthy—we’re in this together.
