Hear me out: The Jayhawks are Pure Entertainment

via KUAD

Jayhawks fans have a right to be frustrated. The DP situation is chaos, and the conspiracies are flying — agent interference? Hamstring tendinopathy? Some unholy combination of all of the above — and the Jayhawks haven’t quite figured out how to handle it all. DP is God’s direct gift to basketball, and he can’t finish games. We are in the midst of a singular KU experience.

HEAR ME OUT … as a televised/marketed product, Jayhawks basketball is can’t-miss TV right now. The drama is absolutely Biblical.

I had the great fortune to attend the BYU game last Saturday, and it was a capsule of life in one two hour montage — joy, pain, boredom, frustration, awe. I probably should have spun out a free-standing DP newsletter; as a basketball player and a talent, it is a blessing to watch this guy work. It looks so easy because it is so easy.

Trying to spec out how this all fits together, how it could end … what an exercise. Cruising through the Phog’s Rally House team store, many DP jerseys sat untouched, as people decide whether his involvement this season is blessing or (light) curse. (No Melvin Council Jr jerseys available, in any capacity, bravo fanbase.)

I’ll say this — I think the kid is in the middle of it, and I feel for him. I am emotionally attached to him. There’s so much pressure, so many stakeholders, so many potential outcomes. His divine hooping is largely a given. Can KU come up with a feasible plan to optimize his involvement? Why don’t we have a bench? Can we find offense in the minutes he doesn’t sit, and can we spell Melvin Council Jr so he’s not about to puke on the court in crunch time?

I had planned to pump a newsletter after tonight’s Texas Tech tilt — what a brutal back to back, to begin a brutal conference stretch — though I anticipate tonight might be a little “white flag” lift. Tech doesn’t lose at home, and our guys are gassed. Here’s hoping my Kohl Rosario agenda — Kohlminers, put on those hardhats — gets some data tonight, since we need some other guys to give minutes, good or bad.

Rock Chalk. What a thing. Talk soon.
