War? What is it good for?
Hello Friends,
Ooh - I've gotten one of my friends into Bloodborne and have had the distinct pleasure of watching them become a skilled hunter of beasts. "Favorite" is such a messy, fickle word, but Bloodborne might deserve it.
On the other hand, I am now Balatro-pilled. Which means every waking moment requires asking myself "Why aren't I playing Balatro right now?"
The Brain Box
~ divers inputs for creative outputs ~
🌎 Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple - ". . . experience the eerie beauty of 8,000 statues dedicated to lonely souls." A temple in Kyoto with a striking number of statues. Well, 8,000 statues.
🧿 The Decimal Labyrinth - I don't know what the fuck she is saying but girl I am living.
📖 Some wikipedia tidbits this week:
Dehiscence - A botanical term for plant structures splitting open to release seeds.
Arcology - A portmanteau of "architecture" and "ecology." I had to look it up because of Spire (thanks, RRD).
Ten Ancient Battlegrounds
~ dulce est decorum est pro patria mori ~
d10 | You see . . . | Your other senses: | What does History say about the battle? | What do locals say about the place now? |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | An open clearing, now carpeted with soft grass. A straight line of 3 grassy mounds are the only unnatural feature here. | You suddenly feel clammy, like sweat chilling against your skin in the night. | Gruesome, one-sided. A regimented city-state’s militia mowing through a rebellion of farmers and hunters. | Kids dare each other to come here and bring back proof. |
2 | A mire of dark brown mud. Fern fronds curl out of every nook and cranny of the rotting tree stumps scattered about. | You can taste ash and smoke. | The losing army was led by two generals who were married. They were taken as prisoners of war. | Absolutely cursed, though not for any reason having to do with the battle that took place. |
3 | A ring of crumbling standing stones marks the edges of a space where the flowers grow pale and twisted, and the only trees are young saplings without any leaves. | You hear a low rumble with no clear origin. | Allied forces from multiple nations came together to stop “the Whisper Horde.” Considered the turning point in public opinion on constructs due to their role in the allied victory. | Animals born there come out strange. Unnaturally smart. |
4 | A ravine slopes away from you, and the silhouettes of smashed vehicles, wheels, and siege weapons barely rise out of the heavy mist at it’s base. | You faintly smell burning flesh. | Five women wielding fire stood against Fulnark’s One Hundred. | A particular tree grows there bearing unique apples with red juice. Eating one supposedly boosts your strength. |
5 | The sheer side of a cliff with inhumanly large swords, spears, and shields jutting out from the side like platforms. You can tell that this cliff wasn’t always here; something caused an upheaval. | You feel increasingly tense, your breath getting shallower with each step. | An extended war of attrition that produced more casualties than victories for either side. Instigated by some warlord who exploited negative sentiments about the famine at that time. | Yet another example of the government’s failure to care for its people. |
6 | The yellow ripple of grain moved by wind. It makes the long, fallow trench running through the farm look like a wriggling snake. | You feel a sharp pain behind your left eye that quickly subsides. | A pointless war of succession triggered by an assassination. | All the spookiness, the weird feelings - it’s just people scaring themselves. |
7 | The ground is dry and cracked. Vultures sit on a black, hollowed tree trunk. A particularly large crack in the ruined earth is open and puckered, and hot vapor slowly pours from it. | You taste something bitter. | The first expansionist move of many by the current world power. | Truffles harvested here have a highly-prized, complex flavor. |
8 | A uniformly smooth concavity of polished rock, 500 ft in diameter, forming a perfect hemisphere. The trees and plant life abruptly stop at its edge. | You hear a gentle keening as wind blows through the trees. | A tragic massacre spurned by the jealousy of two brothers. Resulted in both their deaths. | Haunted by the dead, still obliviously fighting the war. |
9 | A 30 ft. wide slab of earth has curled up on itself like a scroll 15 ft. in height. The edges are clearly artificial. Grass, shrubs, and flowers grow on the exterior, and mushrooms grow on its interior curves. | You smell something overly sweet and putrid, the rot of roses and blood. | Inconsequential. A vain slap fight over disputed hunting rights. | Supposedly, those who sleep here have dreams depicting the future. |
10 | Small wooden totems planted in the ground as far as the eye can see. Some totems are carved to look like fruits and grains, and others are carved to look like animal faces. | You feel a growing sense of pride. But why? | Nothing; it was too long ago. | It needs to be reclaimed and repurposed. It’s a reminder of tragedy in its current form. |

Thanks
Have fun. Be weird.
