Stone's Throw
I never would have drunk mirto with my friend Laura at a restaurant on the island of Sardinia 7 years ago if I hadn’t met her while working on the coast of Maine when I was 20 (and I won’t tell you how many years ago THAT was). We waited tables that summer at her uncle’s Inn, a collection of 8 homey guest cottages and a main house teetering at the water’s edge on a private peninsula on Casco Bay. Laura and I lived with the other female staff in our own weathered cottage, Stone’s Throw, named for its proximity to the ocean. Laura drove a late 70’s Ford Maverick car in metallic blue (and changed the oil herself); her tiny-framed 5-foot-2-stature flipped the bird at anyone who thought muscle cars were just for burly guys. This pretty much guaranteed our friendship, strong to this day.
