Snap Into It!
Once a month, my dad hauled his empty case of Genny Cream Ale pounders into the car to exchange it for a full one at The Beer Barn. It was a drive-through affair – you pulled up to the warehouse door, popped the trunk, gave your order to the rugged young fellows who fetched the beer from the enormous walk-in and thudded it back into the truck. This doesn’t sound particularly exciting in and of itself. But I waited all month to tag along on those trips because dad would buy us Slim Jims. Processed foods, candy, anything “junk food”– basically the stuff kids want – were forbidden at my house. This departure from the norm proved dad wasn’t as virtuous as he appeared, and I was there for it. The greasy, salty meat stick never lasted the trip home for fear my brother would wrestle it from me. Though I’m sure the smug smile on my face and breath of spicy fire gave my transgression away.
