Pine Point
The first time I tried to quit smoking did not go as planned. I raged through 3 days, alternating between crying and screaming, wishing death on anyone who dared ask me what was wrong, and generally feeling lousy. Day 4, the cigarettes sang their siren song, and I succumbed. I tried to quit again a few years later, this time with the patch. The fear of having a heart attack if I smoked while using the patch was enough to keep me away from the cigs. I crunched through an ENTIRE bag of Lay’s Salt & Vinegar potato chips each day of the first week. My coworkers at the time mercifully put up with my chip chomping and occasional teary outburst with as much grace as they could muster, ultimately in full support of my effort to overcome this beast. After a month, I forgot to slap on the patch, my frenzied potato chip eating had subsided, and I felt free. I’ve been a nonsmoker for 24 years.
