Unique + Useful.
I believe every person has something to offer—an idea, a skill, a perspective.
Something uniquely their own.
But I also know for a fact that: only a few rise above the noise and make a lasting impact.
Why?
Because most folks haven’t mastered the art of being both unique and useful.
And, that’s what I want to bend your ear about today my friend.
Unique - Useful = Wasted Potential
Your uniqueness is one of the greatest gifts you have. Your experiences, your skills, your talents, your perspective, your gifts, your story—there’s not another you on the planet.
Nope. Not one.
But here’s the thing: without utility—without applying that uniqueness to serve others or solve real-world problems—it becomes wasted potential.
Every. Single. Time.
We all know someone who’s exceptionally talented, creative, or smart but never connects that talent to a purpose beyond themselves.
You might want to read that again.
Their uniqueness is an untapped reservoir of possibility—a brilliant artist who never shares their work, a visionary thinker whose ideas stay locked in their mind, a gifted craftsman who never follows through.
I’ve seen it time and time again in coaching conversations.
That’s why it’s so important to connect your uniqueness to something useful.
Ask yourself:
How does my uniqueness meet a real need?
Am I using my gifts to create something meaningful for others?
Useful - Unique = Lost in the Crowd
On the flip side, being useful without being unique means you’re easy to overlook. Sure, you’re dependable, helpful, and doing good work. But it’s work anyone else could do.
That’s a hard truth. You’re helpful, but forgettable.
Imagine a business that offers reliable service—but there’s nothing about them that stands out. They’re just another option in a sea of many.
This applies to individuals too. Someone who’s efficient and dependable but never brings their personality, creativity, or distinct perspective risks blending into the background.
Fear holds them back.
To avoid short-selling your giftedness, ask yourself:
What makes my way of doing things stand out?
How can I bring my individuality into the value I add every day?
Standing out isn’t about being flashy. It’s about weaving your uniqueness into your usefulness.
That’s how you create something memorable. That’s how you build a life and career you love.
Unique + Useful = Impactful Influence
Here’s the truth: when you combine your uniqueness with usefulness, you create real impact.
True influence doesn’t come from standing out just to get noticed. And it’s not about doing good work in the shadows. It’s about using who you are to deliver what others need.
When you find the intersection of unique and useful, you’re not just successful—you’re significant.
Let’s break it down:
1. Identify What Makes You Unique
What sets you apart? What experiences, talents, and perspectives do you bring that no one else does? Self-awareness is key here. Reflect on your strengths, passions, and story. Your uniqueness isn’t just about what you’re good at—it’s about what makes you different.
2. Make It Useful
How can you solve problems or meet needs in a way that improves life for others? Usefulness is about creating value—and value always stems from addressing a real need. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an artist, or a teacher, your work must resonate with others to make a difference.
3. Bring Them Together
Deliver value in a way only you can. That’s where the magic happens. It’s not enough to be unique or useful in isolation—you have to combine them.
When your distinct perspective meets a tangible need, you create something impactful and irreplaceable.
Examples of Unique + Useful:
Take Elon Musk. He doesn’t just build electric cars; he reimagines industries with bold, innovative solutions. His unique vision meets a need for sustainability and technological advancement—creating massive impact.
Or Malala Yousafzai. Her courage and story of standing up for girls’ education made her an influential advocate. Her uniqueness lies in her journey. Her usefulness comes from how she channels it into actionable change for millions.
Then there’s artists like Stephen Wilson Jr. His talent as a songwriter is paired with his ability to connect deeply with his audience. He’s not just making music—he’s crafting stories that resonate. His uniqueness + usefulness put him on the map.
The Sweet Spot of Influence
The intersection of unique and useful is where true influence lies.
So ask yourself:
Are you playing it safe by just being useful and blending in?
Are you holding back your uniqueness, letting your potential go to waste?
The world needs your unique kind of useful.
Tattoo that on your mind. Hide it in your heart.
Because when you combine the two, you’re not just creating value—you’re changing the game.
Simply by being your best self.
If you’re stuck, reach out. It’s a coaching conversation I love having.
