See through things.
Most people find satisfaction in just watching events unfold. But, there's a handful who invest their precious time, energy and attention to look underneath the surface of things.
To what's really going on.
You see, vision isn't just about painting a compelling and clear picture of the future.
Nope.
It's about diving beneath the superficial layers of bullshit, rationalization and confusion to grasp the underlying truths of what's being said.
That's what I mean by "seeing through things."
Throughout my coaching career, I've encountered countless problem-solvers, but not very many genuine pattern-seers.
I estimate that less than 5% of the population take the time to unearth this innate ability.
And, by innate, I mean we all have the raw materials within us. They just need to be dusted off, strengthened and shined up a little bit.
Those who have eyes to see and ears to hear are labeled as mystics and gurus in spiritual circles. Or, as pioneers and quote-unquote visionaries in scientific circles.
What do they all have in common?
At their core, they excel in pattern recognition, perceiving the intricate connections that construct the grand scheme of things. They possess an uncanny knack for discerning concealed motives and intentions, hearing the unspoken narratives, and sensing the subtleties of energy.
I believe this skill is one that can be honed by anyone. It just takes time. Patience. And, a lot of practice.
So, here's a practical exercise to experiment with: Once a day, in your interactions this week, ask yourself "Why" three times internally during the conversation. Fight the urge to interject with your own opinions and instead focus on discerning patterns in others' expressions, especially recurring words, themes or emotional undercurrents.
It may sound straightforward, but it demands your undivided attention and concentration.
As you deepen your understanding of both the external and internal landscapes, you'll notice a profound shift in your interactions and perceptions.
You'll begin to notice subtleties and connections that you previously overlooked or missed.
You'll begin to be more intuitive and sensitive in your ability to discern what's really going on.
And, you'll help others hear what they're really trying to say in ways they didn't even realize.
I'll leave you with a beautiful quote from Karl Menninger about his take on this kind of listening:
"Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand."
Here's to the power of seeing through things.
