A 20-minute bridge for an urge spike
When an urge spikes, you do not need a life overhaul. You need a bridge.
An urge can feel urgent without being an emergency. For the next twenty minutes, the goal is not to prove purity. It is to create enough space that your next decision is not entirely on autopilot.
This is urge surfing in plain English: notice the wave, make room for it, and let time give you more choices. It is education—not therapy and not a cure.
A 20-minute bridge
Change the channel. Put your phone face down, move it out of reach, or leave the room. You are changing this moment, not making a forever decision.
Get specific about the room. Name three things you can see, two you can feel, and one you can hear. Keep it ordinary. Boring helps attention return to the present.
Guess what might be underneath. Ask gently: what could this urge be asking for—escape, loneliness, arousal, rest, comfort, or numbness? Answer in five words or fewer.
Start with the body. Drink water. Eat if hungry. Unclench your jaw and lower your shoulders.
Set a timer for twenty minutes. You are buying time, not promising anything about the rest of your life. When it ends, check in again.
If you use anyway
That does not make the exercise a failure. Debrief without torching yourself: What happened just before? What did you need? Small observations are data, not a verdict.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, seek immediate support from local emergency services or iasp.info/suicidalthoughts.
