Karmic Home Ownership
Hi friends,
As of when this is going out, I’ll be on a plane (!!!) to Toronto. It’s going to be weird, but I’m excited. It’s been awhile since I last wrote anything, around 6 weeks I think, and what a whirlwind it’s been. I’ll give you the highlights. It feels like I’m getting karmic payback (vindication?) for my views on home ownership.
- We moved into the house we bought.
- We had a leaky pipe after 2 days.
- I built a home gym in the garage (photo below).
- It flooded, after 6 days of 37º in Calgary with no air conditioning.
Excellent! You’re all caught up. I am currently 1.5 weeks into a two-month sabbatical and still trying to get into the swing of things. I have been trying to balance relaxing with reading, working out, and building things. As Calgary opens up, I’ve been spending time at coffee shops and buying random things in the city because I haven’t been outside in so long.
My recent kick has been trying to design my working area upstairs. I usually have way too many things on my desk (Gaming PC, work PC, PS4) which leads to clutter and a mess. I was reading this article and felt inspired to completely re-do things. I spent an afternoon googling standing desks, monitor stands, cable organization, desk inspiration on Pinterest, and buying random shit of course. I toyed with the idea of hiring an interior designer to help with the office because I’ve only ever been focused on my desk, but there’s more to the room than just that. If anyone has any tips, things they love, design inspo, or tips, please share! I am but a lost child in the big world of interior design.
I’m still easing back into writing. I’ve been trying out morning pages which tends to exhaust my capacity for words throughout the day. I’m hoping it shifts from exhausting to inspiring, but if not, it’s the only time I’ve managed to keep up a writing habit. Two weeks and counting!
What I’m Reading
(I can’t figure out how to un-rotate this lol)
My friend Dylan got me a new book, Who We’re Reading When We’re Reading Murakami. I just finished it yesterday and really enjoyed it. It gave a nice look at the work of translators and how much of a book that you read is actually the work of the translators, not just the authors. Over the course of his career, Murakami has had several different translators with different styles. I haven’t paid close enough attention to notice how one writes versus another, but it might be something I try to discern during my next re-reads. I plan to start scouring some bookstores for alternate translations of the same books in case I want to compare.
I want to spend a bit more time in the coming weeks writing both about the book and my love for Murakami.
Something to share
As you can see, I’m freestyling the format of this one a bit. I’m not super satisfied with what I had before.
Regardless, I came across this beautiful little page in one of my latest web binges. I found Linus, a young programmer and writer, over the weekend and just tore through his blog. He writes about productivity with an interesting bend and it was definitely my shit. a piano and you is a small, interactive poem that I really love. Make sure you have audio!
That’s all for me this week. Crossing my fingers I put something out next week as well! (no promises)
