What happened this week

This was a week where the machinery of government kept turning against the people it's supposed to serve, and against the officials trying to hold the line. The Justice Department fired a career prosecutor for refusing to sign off on the dismissal of a bribery case, days after a federal judge had already faulted DOJ leadership for how that dismissal was handled. In Missouri, the Secretary of State told local officials to use a congressional map the state Supreme Court had explicitly barred him from using, and now faces a contempt hearing for it. And in Indiana, a federal judge threw out a voting-rights challenge on a standing technicality, leaving Hoosiers with no path to relief before the midterms — one of several stories this week where courts and agencies narrowed who gets to be heard, from the Census Bureau's move to strip noncitizens and race questions from the count, to an Interior Department freeze of $25 million in national park grants aimed at groups it accused of opposing "the priorities of this administration."

Elsewhere, the week's record ranged from the small and personal to the enormous and structural. An asylum seeker at a California detention center went undertreated for a kidney infection for ten months. A Navy sailor took the stage at a partisan convention in apparent breach of the Pentagon's political-activity rules. Jimmy Kimmel said FCC pressure got his interview with a Senate candidate pulled from broadcast TV. President Trump promised every American adult $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms. And a federal judge ruled that DHS illegally gutted nearly half of FEMA's disaster-response workforce, in direct violation of a law Congress passed after Hurricane Katrina specifically to prevent that. Sixteen entries, one thread: institutions built to check power being pressured, sidestepped, or dismantled outright.
