What happened this week

This was a week where defiance of courts and attacks on the press ran through nearly every thread. In Brooklyn, a party chair held a leadership vote a judge had explicitly barred, installing an ally with a minority of elected votes. In Washington, the Bureau of Prisons terminated its union contract for a second time, eight days after a judge ordered the first termination reversed. On the media side, the White House kept Politico off Air Force One on its own scheduled pool day, Trump called for the New York Times to be arrested over a crowd-size photo, and the Justice Department opened an antitrust probe into five networks for jointly pausing pool coverage after earlier bans. Trump also used an anti-transgender slur against a Senate candidate and told Minnesotans to "fight back" against Somali immigrants he blamed for "Violence, Murder, and Mayhem" — both posted from his official account.

Beyond the headlines, this week's record also traced a lot of quieter self-dealing and self-protection: the GAO found HHS illegally withheld $78 million in health research funds, Trump's August trading disclosure showed $5–25 million in Meta stock alongside large positions in companies his administration regulates, an Oklahoma legislator was found to have steered public authority toward his own nonprofits and a company he co-owned, and a Philadelphia utility CEO left Phillies-funded trips off his ethics filings for years. FOIA records also showed Homeland Security Investigations screening more than 150 voter-registration groups and weighing undercover agents against them — turning up no wrongdoing — while a DOJ ethics memo quietly freed Senate-confirmed appointees, including the Attorney General, from the stricter political-activity limits the department had held them to for decades.
