What happened this week
Election season dominated the week. At rallies in Kansas and North Carolina, President Trump tied year-round E15 fuel sales and Camp Lejeune water-contamination settlements to the outcome of the vote: Sen. Roger Marshall's re-election in one case, a Republican win in Congress in the other. On Friday, U.S. attorneys' offices in California demanded that counties set aside ballots from voters on a DOJ "likely noncitizen" list within 48 hours, warning of prosecution. And in Mississippi, Attorney General Lynn Fitch gave a Senate nominee until 3 p.m. to pull an AI-generated ad or face an injunction.
Pressure on judges and the press continued. Trump called Judge Ana Reyes a "crazed lunatic" hours before her hearing on his East Potomac golf course plan, and the Associate Attorney General moved to disqualify two Minnesota federal judges over their comments to the New York Times. FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned broadcasters that airing "fake polls" could jeopardize their licenses, and the White House pulled an Independent reporter from his press-pool turn a day after Trump berated him. Elsewhere, ICE agents detained two U.S. citizens in separate incidents in California and North Carolina, CMS deferred another $1.2 billion in California Medicaid payments without presenting evidence of fraud, and a UNC-Chapel Hill agreement with DOJ and the Education Department locked in policy terms through 2028. Closer to home, a Virginia state senator and a Texas county tax assessor were indicted, a Florida officer was arrested on felony counts, and Newport Beach canceled a court-ordered special election on three resident initiatives.
