We recorded 35 events this week that erode our democratic ideals, and archived 129 entries over the same period — 125 so far this month, bringing the total archive to 2013. If you saw something happen this week that belongs here, send it to our tip line.

What happened this week

This was the week the Flock license-plate-camera scandal went from isolated incident to visible pattern: officers in Georgia, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Texas, and Indiana were fired, suspended, or criminally charged for turning police surveillance networks on ex-girlfriends, spouses, romantic rivals, and one deputy's own girlfriend (2,055 times, logged as "city planning"). None of it was caught in real time — every case surfaced only through an after-the-fact audit, the same structural gap recurring agency after agency. Meanwhile, the war with Iran continued without the congressional authorization lawmakers explicitly withheld in June, CENTCOM striking roughly 100 targets under a new "tanker for tanker" policy and drawing missile retaliation on U.S. bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Ahead of the midterms, DHS diverted a major-crimes unit into a nine-state voter-fraud investigation surge built on numbers its own records don't support, while DOJ subpoenaed Nevada's voter data even as courts kept rejecting its legal theory for getting it, and Tarrant County commissioners voted along party lines to cut 92 polling sites in majority-minority precincts. DOJ also expanded its campaign against transgender rights — a fourth hospital forced to end pediatric gender-affirming care, a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against a Kansas school district, and ICE detainees denied hormone therapy in Arizona and Colorado — while a Pentagon official's undisclosed millions in AI-industry stock sales, a fired whistleblower and a fired career prosecutor, and a utility suing reporters over an accidentally released public record rounded out a week that touched nearly every institution meant to check power rather than exercise it.
