What happened this week

Immigration enforcement dominated this week's record. DHS asked a contractor to pull voter registration and history files from all 50 states annually for ICE fraud detection, while Illinois police, sheriffs, and state's attorneys were found circumventing the state's TRUST Act to funnel residents' data to ICE anyway. The State Department moved to revoke B1/B2 visas for up to 200,000 asylum seekers and quietly paused immigrant-visa interviews worldwide, DOJ sued Franklin County's municipal court over its ban on warrantless ICE courthouse arrests and sued four more states over in-state tuition for undocumented students, and a Chicago immigration court ordered six unaccompanied minors with pending special-visa applications removed. In Florida, ProPublica found Pinellas County Jail was systematically rebooking immigrant detainees to dodge the 72-hour ICE hold limit.

Other entries traced familiar patterns of secrecy and pressure: a CENTCOM official confirmed a blacklist of journalists who call the command too often, records requests sat unfulfilled for years in Florida and Idaho, a West Point professor lost his contract after objecting to being told to stop teaching climate science, and an Air Force major was charged for publicly criticizing the president. DHS surfaced a legal memo built to route National Guard troops around the Posse Comitatus Act, Border Patrol blockaded tribal police to protect wall contractors accused of illegally drilling wells in New Mexico, and Interior Department leadership pushed the Park Service to trade away part of Yosemite to a private developer. A U.S. military task force carried out its 68th strike on a suspected narcotics vessel, and a lawsuit accused Rikers Island staff of shackling a pregnant detainee for months despite state and federal bans.
