What happened this week

This week's record kept circling back to two things: institutions bending to political pressure, and people who pushed back on that paying a price. Attorney General Todd Blanche told NBC's "Meet the Press" he won't pledge the Justice Department will act independently of the White House and that he does weigh Trump's views in prosecution decisions — a rare on-the-record admission rather than a case-by-case dispute. The press retaliation pattern showed up twice: the White House's Rapid Response account went after CNN's Kristen Holmes, invoking her children, after Trump berated her in the Oval Office, and the Pentagon forced out and then fired the top editorial leadership of Stars and Stripes, including publisher Max Lederer and editor-in-chief Erik Slavin, over a CBS interview about editorial interference. An Air Force major was ordered into pretrial confinement after criticizing Trump on CNN — his second detention tied to political speech.

Federal civil-rights enforcement kept getting turned into a lever rather than a shield: new Title VI investigations opened into William & Mary's scholarships and Milwaukee's school discipline policies, a DOJ whistleblower alleged the antisemitism task force rigged its Harvard, Columbia and Brown probes to extract settlements, and HUD quietly withdrew its own finding that a Long Island housing authority discriminated against disabled and Black residents. Locally, a Michigan corrections officer allegedly altered a Native American prisoner's ID with a racist caricature and posted it publicly, Kansas City security officers handcuffed a stadium-subsidy critic at a public hearing, and North Carolina's elections board voted along party lines to cut Sunday early-voting hours across 20 counties. ICE detentions continued too, including a Padres coach picked up at the El Paso airport despite a pending asylum case, and two people arrested en route to medical appointments in Santa Fe.
