A DHS whistleblower disclosed on September 14, 2026 that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ordered Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate officers to misrepresent themselves as voters on state election websites to access individuals' registration and voting records, and to open federal law-enforcement files against people flagged by unreliable data as "likely naturalized citizens." Sens. Alex Padilla and Chuck Schumer made the disclosure public and demanded DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow halt the practice, which the whistleblower said may have already produced thousands of state-law violations.
