DHS Inspector General found ICE officers misused pepper spray and an unauthorized chokehold at overcrowded Krome detention center

Event: September 16, 2026 Location: Miami, Florida Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Corrections abuse, Violence in immigration enforcement

A Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General report, disclosed around September 16, 2026, found that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Krome North Service Processing Center in Miami-Dade, Florida was operating about 25% over capacity during an unannounced May 2025 inspection, with detainees held in overcrowded intake rooms for over 12 hours and sleeping on floors for lack of beds. Inspectors also documented two use-of-force violations — an officer used pepper spray on detainees who were not resisting instead of de-escalating, and another placed a detainee in an unauthorized chokehold — along with food-safety violations and 15 unfilled medical-staff vacancies. ICE accepted all nine of the inspector general's recommendations but had not implemented all of them as of the report's release.
