On September 9, 2026, the U.S. Census Bureau, an agency of the Department of Commerce, filed a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to exclude undocumented immigrants and other noncitizens without permanent legal status from the population counts used to apportion U.S. House seats, and to eliminate the census's race and ethnicity questions. Justice and Education departments found UC Berkeley Law discriminated against white, Asian applicants
Event: September 9, 2026 Location: Berkeley, California Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Targeting marginalized communities, Politicized investigations
On September 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights announced joint investigative findings that the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law violated Title VI by discriminating against white and Asian applicants in admissions. The departments said Black applicants had 5.8 times higher odds of admission than comparable white applicants in 2025, citing admissions data and the law school's use of race-identifying essay prompts. Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky disputed the findings, saying the school's admissions policy does not consider race.

Trump pledged $5,000 payments to every American adult contingent on Republicans winning the midterms

President Trump told a Republican midterm convention crowd in Dallas, Texas on September 9, 2026 that his administration would send every American adult a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" payment if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in November, an offer he called the "best part" of his speech. He cited tariff revenue but offered no funding mechanism or legislative path, and the pledge -- estimated to cost over $1 trillion -- drew immediate accusations of vote buying, which Vice President JD Vance did not dispute so much as defend on Fox News.
