Justice Department subpoenaed four New York Times reporters over their Air Force One security reporting

On July 11, 2026, federal agents served grand-jury subpoenas on New York Times reporters Julian Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager, and Eric Schmitt, ordering them to testify in Manhattan in connection with an alleged violation of federal criminal law. The subpoenas, issued by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton of the Southern District of New York, followed Times reporting that the plane the administration is preparing as Air Force One lacked certain defensive countermeasures. Times deputy general counsel David McCraw called the subpoenas a "brazen act" that "should shock the conscience."
