Federalized Tennessee National Guard soldiers fatally shot Tyrin Johnson during Memphis foot pursuit

Event: July 5, 2026 Location: Memphis, Tennessee Jurisdiction: Federal Abuses: Excessive force by law enforcement, Federal deployment against civilians

Early on the morning of July 5, 2026, two Tennessee National Guard soldiers assigned to the Trump administration's federal Memphis Safe Task Force fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson during a foot pursuit in downtown Memphis after he turned toward them while holding a handgun. Johnson was struck twice in the chest and died at the scene despite first aid from Guard medics; the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating at the request of the Shelby County District Attorney. It is the first fatality attributable to the federalized deployment, which has patrolled Memphis since October 2025 over the objection of Mayor Paul Young.
