On July 16, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule replacing "duration of status" admission — under which F academic students, J exchange visitors, and I foreign-media nonimmigrants could remain for the length of their program or assignment — with fixed admission periods. Students and exchange visitors are capped at four years per admission, foreign journalists are limited to 240 days, and journalists holding passports issued by the People's Republic of China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) to 90 days. The rule, issued as Federal Register document 2026-14439, takes effect 60 days after its scheduled July 17, 2026 publication and is subject to congressional review.

White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez bet on the contents of Trump's speeches, profiting more than $90,000

On July 16, 2026, Gabriel Perez -- President Trump's longtime White House teleprompter operator and a deputy assistant to the president -- was placed on unpaid administrative leave amid a federal investigation into more than $90,000 he made betting on the contents of Trump's public speeches through the prediction-market platform Kalshi. Perez, who is often the last aide to see the president's remarks before delivery, wagered on Kalshi "mention markets" predicting which words and phrases Trump would use; the platform's surveillance team flagged the trades, froze the profits, and referred the matter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Perez is cooperating with the CFTC and is in settlement talks over the trades, according to sources cited by multiple outlets.
