Religious & Charity Worker Visa Sponsorship in the UK

You've found a church, a mission, or a charity in the UK you'd love to work for, and someone has mentioned "visa sponsorship" as if it's one thing. It isn't. Faith and charity work in the UK splits across three separate visa routes, each with its own rules on pay, length of stay, and whether it ever leads to settling here. Pick the wrong one in your head and you'll waste weeks applying to organisations that were never going to sponsor you for that kind of role.

This is a job-search guide, not immigration advice. The goal is to help you tell the routes apart, check whether an organisation can actually sponsor you before you apply, and find the roles that exist. For anything specific to your case, speak to an OISC-regulated adviser.

The Three Routes, Kept Straight

Every one of these routes needs the same thing to exist at all: an organisation that holds a Home Office sponsor licence and issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). No licence, no CoS, no visa, whatever the job ad says.

Where they differ is what the work is and how long you can do it. In one line each:

  • Minister of Religion (T2) is for paid, pastoral work leading or serving a faith community, and it's the only one of the three with a path to settling permanently.
  • Religious Worker (Temporary Work) is for paid, non-pastoral religious work, capped at two years, with no settlement path.
  • Charity Worker (Temporary Work) is for unpaid voluntary work for a charity, capped at twelve months, with no settlement path.

The single biggest mix-up in this whole area is treating "Religious Worker" and "Minister of Religion" as the same thing. They are not. One is a temporary route for support roles; the other is a long-term route for people leading congregations. Get that distinction right and the rest follows.

Minister of Religion Visa (T2)

This is the route for pastoral, congregation-facing work. According to gov.uk, you can apply if you've been offered a job within a faith community, for example as a minister of religion, a missionary, or a member of a religious order.

Who it's for. People taking a substantive, paid role at the front of a faith community: leading worship, pastoral care, and the work a congregation depends on week to week.

Sponsor licence required. Yes. You need a licensed sponsor who issues you a CoS, and the role has to be a real job offer from that organisation.

Paid or unpaid. Paid. Your employer must pay at least the minimum wage and follow UK rules on working hours. If they don't, the application is refused.

Duration. Up to 3 years and 1 month, or the time on your CoS plus 14 days, whichever is shorter. You can apply to extend.

Money you'll need. The application fee is £819 if you apply from outside the UK, or £943 to extend or switch in the UK, and dependants pay the same each. On top of that comes the healthcare surcharge, and you'll usually need to show at least £1,270 in savings held for 28 days, unless you've been in the UK on a valid visa for 12 months or your employer certifies they'll cover your first month. This route also requires you to prove your knowledge of English.
