The Curious COUNT of Growing Older

As children,
each birthday’s a prize.
"I'm FOUR AND A HALF!"
you proudly announce.

Then come the teen years,
"I'm GONNA BE 16"--
eventually. – someday--
(even if we’re only 12).

Then the long-awaited day arrives
you BECOME 21!!
Then suddenly TURN 30,
wondering WHAT HAPPENED??

You're PUSHING 40.
You REACH 50.
Then you MAKE IT to 60.
Building speed, HITTING 70.

Now it’s a DAY-TO-DAY thing,
you hit lunch time
then comes WEDNESDAY,
wondering where TUESDAY went.

When 90 ARRIVES,
you count backward.
"I was JUST 92."
and at 100 1/2, you simply smile.

Now, you stop and think.
“Hum, I’m turning
SUCH-AND-SUCH this year.”
