Reflection #55 Harvesting
The Gap Year: Reflection #55 Harvesting
“We cannot live in a world interpreted for us by others. An interpreted world is not a hope. ― Hildegard of Bingen
The week I retired my family threw me a grand party. It was a launching into elderhood where people expressed their appreciation through gifts and conversation. I felt special, loved, and valued by the people who meant the most to me. This helped me realize how important it is for elders to have an occasion such as a party or ceremony to mark the transition from one stage of life to the next. I see how important it is to take time to harvest.
This “harvesting” is revisiting the fruits of our experiences and appreciating them. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions made in careers and family life. To appreciate friendships nurtured, colleagues mentored, and wider community involvement. It is also a time to acknowledge that the most important relationship we have is with ourselves.
As we harvest, we assure ourselves that we have been given much and we have much to offer. Our presence can be a powerful energy field – not a doormat. The power of our presence can be offerable, available with great generosity of spirit to those who not only need more goodness and care but need a reminder that such simple goodness is attainable by all of us ordinary beings.
I try to make a harvesting walk my daily habit. As I set out with my dog, Bear, I spend the first minutes gazing at the outdoor beauty around me then speak aloud words of gratitude for individual people, circumstances, neighbors, the earth, and whatever comes to mind. I find I walk more lightly. With more gratitude. More peace. Into a kinder heart. I remind myself that it is important to take time to harvest.
Now it’s your turn. Take time to reflect and, if in a group, share as you feel able.
As I harvest, I’m finding I can:
celebrate this time of transition.
revisit and appreciate the fruits of my experiences.
be grateful for individual people, circumstances, neighbors, and the earth.
experience more peace and move into a kinder heart.
