Reflection #36

These days
I am practicing
the fine art
of being useful
to the parents
of my grandchildren—
which mostly means
smiling,
complimenting,
offering words of encouragement.
I’m honing my diplomatic skills,
polishing my self-discipline,
learning when to speak
and when to keep quiet
I remember
the many mistakes I made
as a mother—
oh, so many—
and I bow deeply
to the experts now:
my own grown children,
following their lead.
I am learning
to love fiercely
to care deeply
without being in charge.
To instill some values
that matters most:
hard work and kindness,
fun gatherings and good food.
And, if I may
sneak in one more gift—
I hope it is this:
a keen-hearted sense of humor.
