Privacy-focus Analytics
Hey everyone,
I wanted to take this chance to promote alternative Analytics solutions here. As many know already, Google is tracking every step you take on the web. One tool for this is Google Analytics (GA). Recently, I’ve checked out a few options to de-google my websites more. I’ve had a look at these services:
-
Fathom (GitHub, Demo): Unlimited websites and email reports. GDPR compliant (no cookie consent banner required). From $14/month for 100k views.
-
Plausible (GitHub, Demo): Unlimited websites. Hosted in the EU. GDPR, CCPA and PECR compliant. From $4/month (annual plan) for 10k views. VuePress driver, for these interested.
-
Umami (GitHub, Demo): Self-hosted solution. Compliant with GDPR, CCPA and PECR. So cost and server location depend on yourself. I’ve hosted my Umami instance using Hetzner and Forge for around 3.30 USD per month and it should be able to handle millions of visits without issues. Same could be done on Digital Ocean or any other VPS hosting provider. Again, a VuePress driver.
-
Simple Analytics (not open-source, Demo): Unlimited websites. Servers in the Netherlands. $19/month for 100k views.
I hope this overview helps you, if this is an issue for you. As emails don’t update well, I’ve put this list on Github too and intend to keep it updated there.
Don’t like to pay for Analytics? Don’t forget, if you aren’t paying for a product (or service), you are the product.
Cheers,
